A new design survey from the Design Council reports that an increasing number of firms are using design as a powerful tool to help combat the tough economic conditions. The survey of 1,500 firms showed that design is setting the marketing agenda. Over half of the businesses surveyed said that design, in some form, has become a more crucial ingredient in the business mix over the past three years. The same number agreed that design is integral to the whole country's future economic performance.

There are many ways design can help your business perform more strongly, from improving your image (internally and externally), innovating your products or services, through to enhancing your overall efficiency and saving you money. Companies of all sizes and sectors have worked with designers to improve their performance during challenging conditions.

Castle Rock Brewery decided to cast off its homespun image with a modest investment in redesigning its marketing communications and graphics. The result rapidly helped secure more distribution and sales contracts. Within a year they have seen a substanstial return on their investment. Demand is outstripping supply and sales volume has increased significantly.
Castle Rock Brewery Chairman Chris Holmes says: "A small investment in design has paid huge dividends for us. We now have a clearer focus and a brand that reflects the care and attention that has gone into our award-winning beers. I no longer regard design as a luxury, but as a competitive necessity."
